Christmas is probably my most favorite time of the year, as I am sure it is for many others. I can’t my finger on just why, but everything about the holiday season brings joy and warmth to my heart. From the first day that the Christmas songs appear on the radio, to dragging out all the Christmas decorations and putting them up with the boys, we have a million holiday traditions that we keep up each year. As my boys get older, I really want to help build #NewTraditions and help them enjoy the holiday season to the fullest.
One of our favorite holiday traditions is making sweet treats together. Each Christmas Eve, we always go ice skating, then we go look at Christmas lights and finally, we come home to make a sweet treat for Santa before going to bed.
The holidays are the sweetest time of the year, and Hershey’s wide variety of baking products – from classic ingredients like Hershey’s Chocolate Chips and Hershey’s Cocoa Powder to iconic Hershey’s Kisses – will delight everyone at your table this holiday season.
This year, products like Hershey’s Cocoa Powder, Hershey’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and Hershey’s Kisses Candy Cane Mint Candies are helping us put together an extra fun and delicious treat. I wanted to create a cake ball that looked like lumps of coal and peppermint is one of my favorite holiday flavors, so it was easy to choose what Hershey’s chocolate products we would use to create our delicious recipe. The Hershey Company makes it fun and easy to create new family traditions and sweet holiday memories together.
Chocolate Peppermint Lumps of Coal Cake Pops
- 1 c. butter
- 1/4 c. Hershey’s Cocoa Powder
- 1 c. water
- 2 c. flour
- 1 1/2 c. light brown sugar packed
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/3 c. sweetened condensed milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. finely chopped Hershey’s Kisses Candy Cane Mint Candies
- 1 container of whipped white frosting
- 1 bag Hershey’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2: In a small saucepan, melt 1 c. butter and then add in 1/4 c. Hershey’s Cocoa Powder and 1 c. water. Stir well until barely boiling and then remove from heat and set aside.
Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, baking soda and salt.
Step 4: Add the cocoa mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until blended well.
Step 5: Pour in the condensed milk, eggs and vanilla to the mixing bowl and mix for several minutes until all lumps are gone.
Step 6: Transfer batter to a well greased glass rectangle pan and bake for 20-30 minutes or until a knife comes out clean when stuck into the center of the cake.
Step 7: Let the cake cool completely and then break it into pieces with your hands in a large mixing bowl.
Step 8: Finely chop 1 c. of Hershey’s Kisses Candy Cane Mint Candies and add them to the cake in the mixing bowl along with a container of whipped white frosting. Mix together well with your hands, squeezing and melding the mixture together as you go.
Step 9: Form the cake mixture into rough ball shapes. You want these to be uneven, because they will resemble lumps of coal. Place the cake balls on cookie sheets lined with foil or parchment paper and place them in the freezer to harden.
Step 10. Once the cake balls have hardened a bit, place a bag of Hershey’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips into a microwave safe bowl and heat in the microwave at 30 second intervals stirring often until completely melted. Do not overheat or your chocolate will burn.
Step 11. Dip your cake balls into the chocolate, coating all sides. Place the dipped cake balls back on the cookie sheet and place in the freezer to harden. Once hardened, the cake balls are ready to be served and enjoyed with friends and family. Keep leftover cake balls in containers in the fridge.
