If your children are anything like most of mine, they will gasp, spit, and sputter anytime you insult them by bringing vegetables or healthy food anywhere near them. With the exception of V8 Fusion, which has helped me shove veggies and fruit down my children’s throats, it has often been hard to make sure they are eating well. That is why I have developed a list of “creative” snacks that can easily be made to entice them to eat well. Who knew that eating bugs would be more appealing to my boys then raisins?
Ants on a Log
Ants on a log is one of my boys’ favorites and it is really simple and quick to make. Just take a small piece of celery, coat it in a bit of peanut butter or Nutella and then top it with a few ants (I mean raisins.)
This snack is just what is sounds like. Little blocks of cheese that are magically transformed into spiders. Simply cut any kind of cheese into square or rectangular blocks and add those crispy oriental chow mien noodles for legs. We have also used pieces of shredded carrots and broken pieces of pretzel sticks for legs in the past.
Children like sticks. If you put it on a stick, they will eat it. Don’t ask me why, but they will. Caterpillar kabobs can be made using slim dowels that are not pointed at the end, so that they are safer for young children. Just add fruits or veggies to the dowel and put a face on the end piece with yogurt, ranch dressing or other food item and watch your kids gobble them up. It helps if you call it a caterpillar too. 🙂
To make a snakesicle (yes it is a real word, I made it up,) all you have to do is stick a popsicle stick into a peeled banana, coat it in peanut butter or yogurt, and then add nuts, rice crispie cereal or any other treat to the outside. Stick it in the freezer to let the coating harden and then enjoy.
These are just a few of the things that I have found that help my boys eat healthier. Feel free to leave your suggestions and ideas in the comment section too. How do you get your kids to swallow the dreaded healthy food?
