The other day I talked a little about Dixie’s new #DarkforDinner initiative. I am a huge proponent of putting down electronics and spending quality time together as a family. On our #90DayRoadTrip, the boys are not allowed to have electronics, and I only use mine when necessary for work. Having a job the requires me to be active on social media can make it hard to set aside the electronics and spend quality time with the boys, and that’s why I think that the Dixie #DarkForDinner idea is so wonderful.
What is the #DarkforDinner Challenge?
In case you missed my last post, Dixie, a company that has been serving the country’s paper good needs for the last 90 years, has introduced their #DarkforDinner campaign to help families say no to technology and yes to making memories. Today, June 14th is the first Sunday of the #DarkforDinner challenge. Each Sunday for the next six weeks, the #DarkforDinner movement will continue.
So, what exactly do you do? With the #DarkforDinner challenge, you just agree to sit down for a meal with your family on Sunday without any technology at all. No TV’s, radios, Internet, cell phones or other technological distractions. The boys and I did it this evening for the first official week of the challenge, and it went great.
I took a step away from my phone and posting to social media, and we ordered Chinese takeout in. I took a picture of our meal before it began so that I could share it with all of you. Then, we put away the electronics and had a great time.
We are currently in a hotel at Niagara Falls, and usually in the evening we would watch TV in the hotel room, but because of the #DarkforDinner movement, we had much more fun. After dinner, where we talked all about our day at Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds, we went out for a walk and came across the over-sized backyard games we found the other day. We stopped and played some more of them, and then took a walk down to the Falls for a family photo that we got a fellow tourist to take.
In all, it was a great bonding challenge for me and the boys, and we have decided that we are more than happy to make it a weekly tradition. Check in again in the future to see how we spend out #DarkforDinner evenings.
Want to try some family bonding yourself? Go #DarkforDinner with Dixie® on Sundays for the next six weeks, and see how easy it is to make memories with your friends or family. I would love to hear how your #DarkforDinner meal went, be sure to send a tweet to @KBunn with the hashtag to let me know how it went!
